Malachi didn’t care for providing updates, but it came with the territory when working for someone else. As his career progressed in Mossad and especially Shin Bet, he could pawn off paperwork and keeping the brass in the loop onto lower-ranking colleagues. Here, it was just him. “Sadozai is dead,” he told Pazir after the indignity of being left on hold for five minutes. “I found a local to send after Tyler. He didn’t do much, but he got me some useful video.”

“What happened to this man?” Pazir demanded.

“Tyler injured him. He then wanted more money to maintain his silence. I handled it.”

“Excellent. What are your current plans?”

“I’m watching the daughter,” Malachi said. “She’s far more security conscious than her two roommates.”

“Do you think you could get her?”

“Of course.”

“Good. If an opportunity presents itself, take it. Nothing would make Tyler suffer more than the abduction of his precious daughter.”

“Didn’t Durrani try to get her?” Malachi asked.

“Tried and failed,” Pazir said. “No doubt, this contributed to his downfall. But you will succeed, my friend.”

Malachi bit down the reflexive response of telling Pazir they were not friends. Instead, he said, “What of the other two girls?”

“They do not matter. Killing them may be messy, but I trust you to do it if you need to.” Pazir chuckled. “Of course, if you could take them, too, I still know some men who would find a use for them. Feel free to sample the merchandise first, of course.”

A shudder crawled down Malachi’s back. He would help Pazir get revenge on Tyler for the challenge and the money. Both were potentially greater than he’d seen in a while. He had no intention of sending any young women into a dreadful life of servitude—or worse—with anyone Pazir knew. Killing them would be far more merciful. “I’ll have to see how it all plays out,” Malachi said, summoning whatever diplomacy he could before changing the subject. “They have another unit mate nearby. He’s making some noise online.”

“Any good data? Something we should worry about?”

“Not at all.” Malachi brought up the post. “‘Three of my friends are dead, and the government we served doesn’t seem to give a shit. Whoever’s out there doing this should come after me next.’ Then, he uses a bunch of made-up hashtags.”

“You can safely ignore him,” Pazir said.

“I could,” Malachi acknowledged, “or I could drive one state north and gut him in his own home.”

“Do you think it will make John Tyler suffer more?”

“I think every death adds a little.”

“Do it if you think it’s best. Otherwise, the daughter would draw him out. His anguish is what matters.”

“Understood.”

“I’ll be arriving soon,” Pazir said. “I want to see Tyler beg for death myself. Once I’m secure, I’ll let you know.”

Malachi hoped Pazir would not travel here. He didn’t need the complication of taking Tyler somewhere else. Maybe Malachi would discover a way around this. He could kill Tyler at a place he controlled rather than some lavish home his benefactor rented from an unsuspecting American family.
